Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

Genre:  Nonfiction

What did you like about the book? Intended for your average Mud Person, this compendium is a guide to the multiple fairy folk who dwell under the earth’s surface.  An introduction by one such creature, Nord Diggums, explains the text and what the reader can expect to learn from it.  Using copious footnotes, he also adds witty comments to the text throughout the work.  Each chapter is broken down into races, information about the species, a message from Mulch Diggums (Nord’s cousin), and a overview of the race by a known expert in the field.  Each chapter is filled with creative and detailed illustrations of the creatures as well as little known facts that will engage and delight readers of the Artemis Fowl series.  Creatively done using wit and humor, the text is engaging and will keep readers turning pages to find out the next fact.  An index and glossary are helpful if readers are not up to date on the series or specific creatures.  Fun for Artemis Fowl fans or perhaps those who enjoy Dungeons and Dragon creatures.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  The book was informative and engaging, however, may not be as well received by audiences who have no love of magical creatures or Artemis Fowl books.

To whom would you recommend this book? Readers in grades 4 and up who enjoy Artemis Fowl or magical creatures would enjoy this title.

Who should buy this book? This would be a good purchase for school or public libraries that have avid Artemis Fowl or D&D fans.

Where would you shelve it? Nonfiction

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  I feel that this title would reside at the top of the “to read” pile.
