About Us

Since 2007, our goal at Youth Services Book Review has been to provide thoughtful and valuable reviews that help Massachusetts librarians select diverse books. As Massachusetts librarians ourselves, we are dedicated to providing meaningful reviews to assist readers and our colleagues.

As of August 2021, Stephanie Tournas from the Robbins Library in Arlington and Susan Harari, a librarian at Boston Latin School, have shared coordinating and editing responsibilities, overseeing over 40 volunteer reviewers from both public and school libraries and fielding offerings from over 200 publishers. We love new publishing ventures, especially when they offer unfamiliar authors and illustrators. Gecko Press sends us books from New Zealand, offering stories featuring native people; Kids Can Press offers Canadian authors; Inhabit Media publishes picture books and graphic novels by indigenous Inuit authors, set in the Arctic.

Many thanks go out to the publishers who provide us with review books. We are always looking for new reviewers to enable us to cover more publishers. We also actively seek new publishers, especially those representing local authors or offering books with multicultural representation.

Each delivery from publishers sees an update to our catalog of books available for review. If you know of anyone who may be interested in participating please forward this website address.

    Hi Stephanie,
My book A Cargo of Hope has just been published by Globe Pequot, Lyons Press. (details below) Because you frequently review books that are similar to mine, I thought it might be of interest to you. I shall be quite happy to send you an electronic review copy. In the mean time, here are a few excerpts from what others have to say about A CARGO OF HOPE.

Early in 1892, one of Norway’s finest wooden ship builders launched a legend. Over a hundred years later Shane Granger and Meggi Macoun were enjoying a siesta when the tsunami of 2004 changed their lives forever. With thousands of people in dire need, they loaded their 120-year-old vessel with donated supplies and set sail for Sumatra. That voyage marked a turning point in this rip-roaring real-life sea tale complete with vicious storms, exotic islands, heart-rending drama and priceless glimpses into real life in paradise. Come feel the wind, smell the riggers tar, and taste the brine in this salty yarn of a century old wooden sailing boat and her crew of intrepid adventurers as they take up their yearly journey delivering educational and medical supplies to some of the world’s most remote island communities. The adventures they encounter along the way are amazing. (Alan Grower, Booksville)

”

Granger is a master storyteller teller Sinbad the Sailor would envy. This story contains all the elements of every fabulous yarn I ever read or dreamed about. Well-written and occasionally downright hilarious there are enough twists and turns, failures, successes and triumph at the darkest hour to keep you turning pages well into the wee hours. (Earl de Blonville FRGS, Leader: Australian Arctic Expedition)

Lovers of heroic tales, and real-life adventure will find much to treasure in A Cargo of Hope. About as far from the typical boring save the world tale possible and still with a humanitarian mission at its core this is a page turner you wish would never end. My advice is not to start reading this book in the evening, not if you expect to sleep that night. I am keeping this one to read again.” (SEA Yachting Magazine, book review)

Thank you for your kind attention
