What did you like about the book? Poor Moomin. His home has been taken over by relatives. He moans to Sniff who responds “Turn them out, you idiot!’ and Moomin replies “But that would be ill-mannered.” On returning to his house with Sniff, Moomin discovers hundreds of his “poor relations” have shown up and now poor Moomin is rushing out to buy more groceries and cook them! Even his bed has been taken over, forcing him to sleep outside in a hammock. When all else fails to make the guests leave, Moomin invites Stinky in who smells so bad that finally all the guests do take off. Problem: Stinky eats everything in the house (he does not eat regular food) and then begins on the house. So now Moomin must find a way to make money to build or buy a new house. And then he meets the Snork Maiden and falls in love… Not quite a happy ending yet as Brigands come, kidnap Snork Maiden and tie Sniff and Moomin to a tree. But hang on, Snork Maiden saves the day!
This is a super fun Moomin story, published originally in 1953 in the London Evening News, full of twists and turns, adventure and Jansson’s wonderful illustrations that can convey so much with so little.
