Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Format: Paperback graphic novel

Genre: Memoir

What did you like about the book? On the first page of this earnest graphic memoir, the author introduces themself to readers as transgender and nonbinary with confidence and warmth, and you understand right away that they have figured themself out. Their long, circuitous journey of self discovery follows, taking the “scenic route,” with a map and many destinations and stops along the way. I loved hearing about this journey, from a kid pegged as a girl with assumptions about what they should wear, play with or do, to a teen thinking they were a lesbian, to finally, in art school, their realization of their identity as transgender/nonbinary. It was so moving to see them experience “gender euphoria,” the deep, happy knowledge that they have found peace in figuring themself out. Luckily, Theo, had support from their loving family and chosen circle of friends.

In the author’s note at the end, Theo explains that they hope that this book is like a warm hug, and it really feels like one. The purple and pink graphic art is whimsical and expressive, and graphic panels give way occasionally to full page emotional moments of self love, which is exactly what we want kids to experience. I would love this book to go to families of kids who are figuring things out, to help them see what their child/sibling is going through. It’s also great for anyone who wants to be an ally.

Anything you didn’t like about it? No

To whom would you recommend this book? For teens who enjoyed Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Adventure by Lewis Hancox and other autobiographical books about sexual identity.

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Near the top
