What did you like about the book? Dung beetles seem to be popular subjects in books right now.  The dung beetle in this story knows just where to find plentiful dung: go where the animals are and wait to be buried in the wondrous stuff as it shoots out of an animal’s behind!  Make that dung into a ball and roll it home.  Fight off any other beetles who try to take it.  The beetle enjoys his good life until a leopard tells him of a place down the road where farm animals plop down large quantities of dung all day long. Wow! The beetle has created a mountain of dung, there is never enough – until it crashes on top of him, burying him in a dark, dark world of dung.  He’s had enough; he lets other beetles carry off his humongous pile.  He decides that standing underneath an elephant’s rear end is good enough for him.

It’s hard to imagine a child not laughing rather uproariously over this story. The pencil and digital illustrations, mostly done in shades of brown and even darker brown, resonate with this dung-ful world.

Anything you did not like about the book? No.

To whom would you recommend this book? How about a dung-themed storytime?  A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and a You by Mike Barfield, Behold the Beautiful Dung Beetle by Bardoe (2014), Steve, the dung Beetle on a Roll by Stoltz (2022) and Doug’s Dung by Rooks (2020) plus quite a few more!

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No.
