I’m Thinking of a Pet by Adam and Charlotte Guillain, illustrations by Lucia Gaggiotti. Nosy Crow, 2021.  9781536223941

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review):  4

Format: Board book

What did you like about the book?  Each page shows a young child thinking of an animal.  Rhyming text provides clues and the reader is invited to guess what animal it is.  Pull tabs along either the right or bottom edge reveal a picture of the pet, its name, and its sound.  The children asking the questions are different colors and genders, and all look to be somewhere around 4-6 years old.  The illustrations have a retro/cartoon/crayon-y look that is appealing.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  In the section on each pet, the left hand side rhymes but the right hand side doesn’t.  It stunts the read-aloud smoothness a little.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Kids who love pets, kids who enjoy asking and figuring out riddles.  I could see some children inspired to make up their own pet word riddles after enjoying this book.

Who should buy this book?  Public libraries, school libraries,

Where would you shelve it?  Board books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
