What did you like about the book? This is a very cute story from the dog, Rumba’s, perspective upon meeting a girl on a beach. He was a hungry stray in the Dominican Republic. When the little girl fed him some hot dogs, he ate some and buried the others because he didn’t know when he’d find food again. They end up becoming friends and the little girl wants to help the dog. She and her father contact shelters and veterinary hospitals, but no one has room for another dog. Finally, the girl and her dad decide to adopt the dog and bring him back home to live in NYC. He has to get checked by a vet and go into quarantine before he can fly on a plane to NYC where he is reunited with the little girl. As I was reading and it seemed like the girl wanted to take him home with her, I was thinking, it’s not that easy. So I was grateful that the book talked about the vet check up and quarantine

Anything you didn’t like about it? The artwork seemed a little cutesy at first, as if done by a child. But there are some instances where it’s downright disturbing. The dog’s tongue as he licks the little girl, the missing chest and torso of her father as if chopped off. There is also what seems to be a misprint on one page where the girl’s arm meets the waves behind her in the ocean where the lines just don’t meet up. For most of the rest of the book, the cutesy art works though.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Children ages 3-8, especially animal lovers

Who should buy this book? Elementary schools and libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Non-Fiction (pet adoption)

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? no
