Rating: 1- 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review) 3

Format:  Board book

Genre:  Picture book

What did you like about the book?   This board book is a reissue of a picture book from 1966.  A lonely little mouse, who longs for friends, decides to leave a gift for Santa on Christmas Eve.  Santa is so touched that he invites the mouse to be his helper, giving him a Santa suit and naming him Santa Mouse.  The illustrations are charmingly retro and appealing.  The sentiment is sweet, but this is not quite a “classic.”

Anything you didn’t like about it? The rhyming text is often forced, making the book difficult to read aloud.

To whom would you recommend this book?  An additional purchase only.

Who should buy this book?  Public libraries and elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it? Board books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles?  No
