What did you like about the book? This true story relives summers in Gloucester, Mass. where a sea captain sails his family’s schooner. His passengers watch for whales, the mansions lining the harbor, and the various boats on the water.  There are a lot of gulls flying about the boats hoping for a flung morsel.  One gull, who is missing a toe on its right foot, flies near and catches the cracker the captain tosses up.  The gull continued to visit throughout the summer until it was time to head for warmer climates.  Would the gull return the following summer?  Yes, it does!  And for four years following. The illustrations, presented in watercolor, oil paints, oil pastels, collage and Photoshop, capture the sea, the ships, and the friendship between the captain and the gull.  Two pages of facts and interesting information about seagulls are included.

Anything you did not like about the book?  No.

To whom would you recommend this book? Children who like human/wild animal relationships will appreciate this story.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  No.
