Big Ship Rescue by Chris Gall, Norton Young Readers, 2022. 9781324019251

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4.5

Format: Hardcover Picture book

What did you like about the book? When gale-force winds attack the huge ship Goliath, it begins taking on water rapidly causing one of the engines to shut down.  The crew is rescued by helicopter, leaving the abandoned ship to crash on the shore unless the Mighty Mackerel, captained by Salvage Master Miley, can save it in time.  Gall’s illustrations are amazing in detail and vividness: the huge ship, the crashing waves, the Mighty Mackerel.  It’s difficult to imagine any young child not being captivated.  Front and back inside covers detail the interior of the Mighty Mackerel.

Anything you did not like about the book?  No.

To whom would you recommend this book? Young readers who like ships and boats in a story that involves action and adventure will enjoy this book.  Also readers who love the illustrations of Chris Gall!

Who should buy this book? Public libraries and child-care centers, Doctors’ offices might be a good idea as well

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? For young children, who love boats, yes.
