The Tinysaurs Send Love by Patricia Hegarty, illustrated by Dean Gray. Tiger Tales, 2021. 9781680102802
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 2
Genre: Holiday/Valentine’s Day/picture book
What did you like about the book? The Tinysaurs, three little dinosaurs named Spike, Roary, and Clawdie, try to raise the spirits in their town. No one is getting any mail and everyone looks sad. They try making gifts for everyone, but nothing turns out right. When they make heart-shaped cards and deliver them around town, everyone is happy, because “love is all you need.”
Cute digital art in lots of bright colors and many hearts creates a cheerful vibe. I like that the book talks about love without specifically mentioning Valentine’s Day, so it has greater versatility.
Anything you didn’t like about it? This book doesn’t make sense. People aren’t getting their mail, so making mail and delivering it doesn’t necessarily solve the problem. Also, I don’t like the message that there’s no value to making gifts if they don’t turn out right.
To whom would you recommend this book? For ages 3-5. An additional purchase for Valentine’s Day collections.
Who should buy this book? Daycare centers and public libraries
Where would you shelve it ? Picture books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
