Format: Hardcover picture book

What did you like about the book?  Schubert and Meisel aim for dog fans everywhere, in this team effort to tell and show us all the things that dogs love. A White family of three (mom, dad, a little girl) head out with their three dogs who love riding in the car, playing with other dogs and their toys, helping with chores, and of course, eating and napping! Schubert’s sprightly text uses short words that will make the book accessible for newly emergent readers. Also helping out: a large clear sans serif font that tells us what dogs love, followed by slightly smaller but still generous print with details. On each oversized page, Meisel’s funny, kinetic illustrations employ pen, ink, and watercolor to accompany Schubert’s lists; there’s lots to look at as people of all races, ages, and abilities interact with the many, many antic canines. Young readers will be in on the joke that “Dogs love cats” as the three pals make room on their bed for a small tiger cat; then, the tables turn as the kitten chases the dogs, accompanied by the text: “Sometimes.”  But, of course, what dogs love most of all is YOU, “all the time.”

Anything you didn’t like about it? No

To whom would you recommend this book?  Children aged 3-6 will enjoy the sing-song text and large pictures with their obvious humor. Families considering adding a puppy may find this book a good introductory read to the joys (and tribulations) of ownership. This would be a good option for a dog- or pet-themed real aloud.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
