Maybe… by Chris Haughton. Candlewick Press, 2021. 9781536220247
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
Genre: Picture book
What did you like about the book? In typical Chris Haughton style (quirky plot, adorable and wily characters, torn paper-esque illustrations), 3 monkeys are told “Do NOT go down to the mango tree. There are tigers down there.” So, of course, the monkeys begin convincing themselves that maybe, just maybe, they can go to the mango tree. Maybe they’ll just look; maybe there won’t be tigers; maybe they could just keep a close lookout and then snag a mango… When the tigers do appear, because of course they must, the monkeys go scampering back to their home tree safe and sound, having learned nothing about not going where they shouldn’t.
Anything you didn’t like about it? I love Chris Haughton and this is another fantastic adventure.
To whom would you recommend this book? Since the monkeys scampering back to their home tree is reminiscent of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (Rosen) story time leaders could easily pack this in with other running away from … books.
Who should buy this book? Elementary schools, libraries both school and public, and families that want to have a laugh-out-loud rollicking story time adventure.
Where would you shelve it? Picture books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No need; you get the gist.
