What did you like about the book? Tess is spending the summer with her cousin’s family in Wyoming and attending art camp just like she did the previous summer. This year, however, she is attending alone after the tragic death of her best friend, Colette (Tornado Brain). Tess suffers from severe anxiety, but she hasn’t received any help because her mother is much more focused on Tess’ twin sister, Frankie, who is autistic and has ADHD. Tess is a talented artist, but struggles to create now that Colette is gone. Even worse, Tess is convinced that Colette is haunting her! It will take some new friends and the support of her sister from afar for Tess to start on the path toward healing.

I loved TORNADO BRAIN by @authorcatpatrick so I was excited to read this companion novel about Frankie’s twin sister, Tess. Every student who tried TORNADO BRAIN last year loooooved it. This one will be a hit, too! Paper Heart is a spectacular MG book about anxiety, grief, and healing. I also love the depiction of the reality of having a neurodivergent sibling.

Anything you did not like about the book? No

To whom would you recommend this book? Students who liked Tornado Brain should definitely read this book, as well as students who enjoy books that explore grief.

Who should buy this book? All elementary and middle school libraries plus public libraries! It’s perfect for grades 4+.

Where would you shelve it? Realistic fiction

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
