Hello Baby Animals – Who are You? by Loes Botman

Hello Baby Animals – Who are You? by Loes Botman. Floris Books, 2021.  9781782507208

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review):  3

Format: Board Book

What did you like about the book?  This is a quiet, simple book for lapsit reading or bedtime.  The first page asks, “Hello baby animals!  Who are you?”  Each subsequent page has a baby animal introducing itself.  Children will learn that baby sheep are called lambs, a baby cow is a calf, etc.  The illustrations are soft and dreamy, with blurred backgrounds.  The baby animals are, of course, very cute.  Because there is so little text, children learning to read on their own may want to come back to this board book.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  There’s nothing I didn’t really like about it – There’s just nothing to make it stand out from other baby animal books.  It is very short and simple, has no story, does not rhyme or play with language.

To whom would you recommend this book? Families with babies and toddlers, public libraries seeking to grow their board book offerings.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, daycares.

Where would you shelve it?  Board books.

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
