What did you like about the book? In Haitian culture we are always reminded that our elders often pass down the wisdom onto the younger generation. This book fully embodies that narrative. From the very beginning of the book we meet a young male character who is worried about his next big life change. He will be moving with his parents away from his familiar school environment and his Grandpa. However, before he leaves his Grandpa gives him advice on how to cope through the anxiety. He gives him a smooth stone from the stream and instructs the main character that whenever he has “worry-thoughts” he should rub the stone and think of something positive. As we navigate through the story we read of several moments where negative worry thoughts would creep into the mind of the main character. He does exactly what his Grandpa taught him, takes deep belly breaths and thinks of positive thoughts. The book is filled with deep wisdom such as the reader realizing just as the leaves change so will there be many changes in his own life. The illustrations are beautiful. They look like they were drawn with colored pencils. The illustrator also, I think, really made readers focus more on the natural settings the main character goes through as he is on a hike. There are lots of blue, oranges and greens throughout the book.

Anything you did not like about the book? Excellent book that teaches readers how to deal with anxiety, negative thoughts and even emotions like sadness.

To whom would you recommend this book? This book is perfect for teaching emotional intelligence to children even as young as 4 years old.

Who should buy this book? Preschools, elementary schools and middle schools

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
