Cat Likes Red by Christopher Russo. Holiday House, 2021. 9780823445875

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre:  Picture book/easy reader

What did you like about the book? This is one of the “I Like to Read” leveled readers from this publisher, a series of picture book-sized easy readers. With the repetitive text – i.e. “Cat likes red. Red is nice” repeating with six other colors, this should work for very early readers. The interest is in the adorable cat and tinted world she imagines when she sees a creature and then pictures the world in the creature’s color. Here is an opportunity to embellish the text with a prompts from the scenes which Cat sees in her travels.

Anything you didn’t like about it? The text itself doesn’t move me, as it is only offers about five words and no drama. I am always conflicted about shelving this series in early readers as the text is so simplistic, beyond many other more fun very early readers. The art is adorable, so I think it works better as a picture book.

To whom would you recommend this book?  For ages 3-6, where this series is popular. This can also work as part of a theme on colors.

Who should buy this book? Day care centers, elementary school and public libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Easy readers or picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
