Curls – written by Ruth Forman and illustrated by Geneva Bowers

Curls – written by Ruth Forman and illustrated by Geneva Bowers, Little Simon, 9781534446311, published December 2020

Format: Board Book

Rating:  1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3

Genre: self-acceptance/self-care/hair-care

What did you like about the book? I like that the book encourages young girls to accept themselves as they are and love their curly hair. It shows them they can choose their own styles and shows them some options. Great pictures show a group of friends with different styles all happily accepting themselves for who they are.

Anything you did not like about the book? The message was great, but the words were sparse and confusing for little ones.

To whom would you recommend this book? Girls, ages 2-5

Who should buy this book? parents of girls with curly hair, especially if they seem to be fighting it rather than have fun with it

Where would you shelve it? Board books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Not really, it has a limited appeal (girls with curly hair)
