Noisy Tractor (I Can Learn My First Sounds) – Lauren Crisp, illustrated by Thomas Elliott, Tiger Tales /Caterpillar Books Ltd., 9781680106695, 2021

Format:  Board Book

Rating:  1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

What did you like about the book? Who does not like a good book that can be used during multiple years of a child’s life?! This book fulfills just that wish. There is no storyline so if a parent or teacher wanted you could make up a different story every time you read the book. The book blends farm habitats with the different parts and sounds of a farm tractor. On each page we are introduced to a different farm scene which includes different animals, crops and farm structures. All of the different things on the page are labeled. There are only two – three lines of narrative text on each page. There is always an interactive statement that requires the reader to touch a different part of the tractor to hear the sound that it makes. All of the drawings are cartoon drawings of animals and farm structures. The tractor in the middle of the book is a 3D touchable tractor that kids can press the different parts to hear the sound that part of the tractor makes.

Anything you did not like about the book? No

To whom would you recommend this book? This is a great book for the child who loves vehicles. It is a great way to expand the young reader’s vocabulary by isolating this one vehicle but changing the scenery and the context in which they would see this tractor.

Who should buy this book? Daycare/early learning facilities, Elementary school for kindergarten

Where would you shelve it? Board books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
