What did you like about the book? This poetic slice-of-life story depicts a young girl’s admiration of her mother, and her desire to emulate her lovely ways. At the same time, the author reminds us that it’s okay to be different, and in fact, our differences should be respected. The soothing acrylic artwork masterfully blends with the lyrical text providing just the right amount of visual cueing for younger readers, and a feast for the eyes to behold.

Anything you didn’t like about it? No

To whom would you recommend this book? This text is chock-full of delightful figurative language and would be a great companion text for a classroom studying literary devices. It is also a wonderful mother-daughter tale that would be a perfect choice to read snuggled up on a cool rainy day. Lastly, it would be a meaningful springboard for a discussion about individuality and its importance. (The family is comprised of people of color –  although their diversity is a welcome addition, it is not central to the story.)

Who should buy this book? Elementary and public libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
