Only the Cat Saw – Written and Illustrated by Ashley Wolff

Only the Cat Saw – Written and Illustrated by Ashley Wolff, Published by Beach Lane Books, 9781481466929, c1985, 2020

Format: Hardcover, 32 pages

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre:  Picture book-Families

What did you like about the book? Beautifully illustrated using acrylic gouache, this sweet narrative follows a family and their cat as evening transforms into a new day.  Alternate pages follow the family as the author describes how they get ready for evening and always ends with “So only the cat saw”.  On every following page, the cat has no text, yet allows readers to image what is being thought using pictures.  Kitty seems to be very curious, discovering happenings both inside and outside the house.  The minimal text would make this perfect for story times as well as a starting point for numerous discussions of bedtime rituals.  The simple vocabulary lends itself to be read together with little ones.  This title could also be used for discussions centered on perspective.  A nice story about family togetherness, which includes all members of the family, both two-legged and four.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I am not sure if a picture of the Tessa in the bathroom was necessary, it may detract from the story.

To whom would you recommend this book? Young readers of all ages who enjoy stories of cats and families will enjoy this tale.

Who should buy this book?  Educators in elementary schools or story time presenters will enjoy this lovely story.

Where would you shelve it? Picture book-Families

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  I feel that this title would reside near the top.
