Genre: Board book
What did you like about the book? With its bright, cheerful woodblock print art and positive messages, this book of affirmations encourages kids to take on body and mood mastery. The author, an Early Childhood Social-Emotional Learning Educator, feels that arming kids with positive words can help them cope with overwhelming emotions. I agree that it is never too early to learn to regulate one’s feelings. The book combines acknowledging feelings with the actions children can take to calm or encourage themselves. For instance, “When your body feels out of control, sit with your hands in your lap and say: I am calm. My body is quiet.” The bodies of kids are represented in race- and gender-neutral shapes. I imagine this book would be most useful as a dialogic read aloud with one or more kids, where the adult helps the kids with examples of big feelings.
