What did you like about the book? This latest installment in the series focuses on female athletes.  Brief biographies are presented in chronological order, beginning with Margaret Ives Abbott, a golfer who unknowingly participated (and won) in the 2nd modern Olympic Games in Paris in 1900.  Well-known icons such as Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Wilma Rudolph, and Paralympian Jean Driscoll lead the way to recent stars like Mia Hamm, Kristi Yamaguchi, and the Williams sisters.  Current standouts like gymnast Simone Biles and fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad round out the list.

Each two page spread includes very short summaries of the childhood and career of the featured athlete. Special attention is paid to the obstacles that were overcome, and the titular phrase is emphasized in every article.  Watercolor illustrations on the verso page depict the athlete as a young girl at play, and the recto highlights accomplishments as an adult, and incorporates an inspirational quote from the subject.  Overall, this is a solid introduction to some very impressive role models and will inspire its readers to seek to learn more about the women included.

Anything you did not like about the book?  A recommended reading list to find out more details about all of these women, and others, would be a useful addendum!

To whom would you recommend this book? Readers of the previous two She Persisted books will definitely enjoy this one just as much.

Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it?  Collective Biography

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  no
