Supertato – written and Illustrated by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet

Supertato – written and Illustrated by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, Aladdin (Simon & Schuster), 9781481490375, 2020

Format: hardcover picture book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

What did you like about the book?  Husband and wife team Hendra and Linnet give us a vegetal supermarket villain and a potato hero to save the day.  This book is action-packed and silly.  Kids will laugh at the goofy things the mischievous frozen pea does to Carrot, Broccoli, Cucumber, and the other denizens of the produce section.

There’s dramatic tension in which it seems the villain may win, followed by a triumphant resolution and a joke that’s sure to crack kids up when read aloud.

The digitally-created illustrations are packed with color and detail.

Expect some littles to want to dress up as a masked potato for Halloween next year.  (They might even eat more vegetables.)

Anything you didn’t like about it? No.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Recommended for fans of silliness and action.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, elementary schools.

Where would you shelve it?  Picture books.

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  No.
