Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3
Genre: Picture book
What did you like about the book? This is a funny Halloween story about friendship. The tiny vampire has trouble scaring people, but needs to successfully pass his vampire test so he isn’t sent to banana peeler school. With the help of a new friend, he passes the test, and his friend is no longer scared of vampires. It’s a light story that will not be too much even for easily scared young readers. The background colors in the illustrations especially set the scene well, and the perspective highlights the size and relationships between the characters. Additionally, there are many humorous details in the illustrations, especially relating to the other monsters.
Anything you did not like about the book. Depending on how it is read, it could seem that the girl is making fun of the vampire for a speech impediment.
To whom would you recommend this book? I’d recommend this to young kids who want Halloween or vampire/monster books but don’t like scary stories.
Who should buy this book? Elementary school librarians, public librarians
Where would you shelve it? Picture books
Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
