A Trip to the Country for Marvin & James (The Masterpiece Adventures #5) by Elise Broach, illustrated by Kelly Murphy, Christy Ottaviano Books, 9781250186096, 2020

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

What did you like about the book:  A sweet friendship story of a boy and his beetle best friend.  This is the fifth story in The Masterpiece Adventures of James and Marvin. James is going to the country for the week and invites Marvin and his cousin Elaine.  Here you will find them in the country visiting James’s dad and Christina exploring many outdoor activities.  In particular, a boat ride for Marvin and Elaine turns into an unexpected adventure that separates them.  An early reader beautifully illustrated full of drama and a nice message about how even small people can help and stay friends all through life.

The fun engaging illustrations were done in pen and ink on CoventryRag paper. The cover is magnificent in portraying what is to come and the special relationship between this young boy and his beetle friend.

Anything you didn’t like about it? No

To whom would you recommend this book?  This is a great read aloud for the early elementary grades and for those transitioning to independent reading with early chapter books.  And if you have read the other books in the series which I look forward to checking out now.

Who should buy this book?  elementary schools and public libraries

Where would you shelve it ?  Early Readers Fiction

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? no
