Crocodiles Need Kisses Too by Rebecca Colby, illustrated by Penelope Dullaghan. Viking, 2020. 9780451480071
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
Genre: Picture book
What did you like about the book? A series of young animals – crocodiles, porcupines, rattlesnakes, vultures, great white sharks, gorillas, tigers, and tarantulas – are shown to crave affection, from tickling to cuddling to squeezing. A young child having a tantrum gets love from his mom at the end, who says, “Despite our looks and what we do, we all need love … and I love you!” Simple repetitive text not only reinforces that we all need love, but promotes empathy in the young reader. I like that the animal choices are slightly off the beaten path of books for the very young. The lovely illustrations, acrylic paint and digital pixels, are pleasing, and gently anthropomorphize the animals to follow the text.
