Format: Board Book
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or starred review) 4
What did you like about the book?: The illustrations in this book are both gorgeous to look at as well as accurate representations of the animals in their different habitats. The author and illustrator paid careful attention to representing both commonly known animals as well as lesser known animals. Our children reading this book will not just learn about lions and bears but they will also learn about Orcas, sloths and even an Albatross! Children can open the flaps to learn more information about the animals and their habitat. Within the bigger flaps there are even smaller flaps that talk about the animal’s habitat or more animals not represented on the main page. The book also covers 6 different habitats! For children who may not have access to zoos and aquariums this book does a great job covering animal science topics i.e. the kinds of animals that live in a coral reef.
Anything you didn’t like about it?: The language for this book fits more for the 4-6 age group although the illustrations and flaps are engaging for younger children as well. Additionally, this book has flaps within flaps which are not easily accessible for smaller fingers to navigate.
To whom would you recommend this book? Young readers ages 4-6 although the illustrations are engaging for children 1-3 years old as well.
Who should buy this book? Daycare with older children and elementary school
Where would you shelve it ? Board Books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
