Muslim Girls Rise: Inspirational Champions of Our Time by Saira Mir, illustrated by Aaliya Jaleel. Salaam Reads, 2019. 9781532218882
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
What did you like about the book? Nineteen Muslim women from around the world are profiled in this colorful collective biography. The picture book size gives room for a large, bright two-page spread for each profile, with enough information to pique interest for young readers. Women in the arts, sciences, sports, politics and law are represented with a brief biographical sketch, a quote and a picture of them in action. The digital animation-like illustrations portray the subjects with beauty and energy. Includes a bibliography.
Anything you didn’t like about it? With mostly one web site per profile, the bibliography is of little use.
To whom would you recommend this book? A useful addition to libraries and 1st and 2nd grade classrooms seeking to diversify their biography collections.
Who should buy this book? Elementary school and public libraries
Where would you shelve it ? Collective biography
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
