Genre:  Concept/alphabet/board book

What did you like about the book? Willems’ picture book is now a board book. A hungry little purple creature eats their way through the alphabet, devouring food, furniture and clothing with equal enthusiasm. After eating N for napkin, they feel O – ooooohhh, Q – queasy, and has to go to the P – potty. You get the idea.  A caring hipster dad creature helps put the little creature to bed (Z – zonked) at the end. This is a funny alphabet book with a story. I have used it often for story time for 3 – 5 year olds. The collage digital art is classic Willems, and the well-read preschooler will  recognize the author and delight in the yuck factor.

Anything you didn’t like about it? As a board book, this may go over the heads of the babies who may be the intended audience. But, imho, one cannot really have too many Mo Willems books on hand, so it’s a small quibble.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Perfect for story time or alphabet units, and great for older sibling to read or interpret for the littlest ones.

Who should buy this book? Day cares and public libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Board books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes, whether in board or picture book form
