Dave’s Rock by Frann Preston Gannon

Dave’s Rock by Frann Preston Gannon, Nosy Crow, 9781536202717, 2019

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre: Adventure picture book

What did you like about the book? Funny tale about two cavemen- Dave and Jon. Dave has a rock, so does Jon. Soon, a competition begins leading to mistaken identity, hurt feelings, and finally a compromise. Their compromise becomes something that is very useful to us today (*spoiler, it’s the wheel). Silly stunted sentences are used (just like the stereotypical caveman). Bright, expressive illustrations detail this lively situation.

Anything you didn’t like about it? No

To whom would you recommend this book? Lessons about compromise, jealousy, invention. Patrons who enjoy funny books or cavemen. Would be a good story hour book.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, day-cares/preschools, elementary school

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
