Squidtoons: Exploring Ocean Science with Comics by Garfield Kwan and Dana Song.

Squidtoons: Exploring Ocean Science with Comics by Garfield Kwan and Dana Song. Andrews McMeel, 2018. ISBN 9781449490249

Format: Paperback

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 2.5

What did you like about the book? Colorful digital cartoons illustrate scientific research on various sea creatures. Back matter includes a glossary and sources.

Anything you didn’t like about it? There does not seem to be a unifying theme to the creatures chosen for this book. Detailed scientific facts seem randomly chosen. Graphics are too large for the format and unappealingly organized. Sources are professional scientific sources that are unlikely to be accessible to children.

To whom would you recommend this book?  I would be unlikely to recommend this; however, kids who like First Second’s Science Comics may find ways to use the book

Who should buy this book? This is an additional purchase for public libraries.

Where would you shelve it ? Children’s non-fiction graphic collections

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
