Snails Are Just My Speed! (Giggle and Learn) by Kevin McCloskey. Toon, 2018. 9781943145270
Format: Hardcover
Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4
Genre: Easy reader/graphic novel/non-fiction
What did you like about the book? Another sweet informational graphic easy reader from the author of Something’s Fishy and The Real Poop on Penguins. Simple declarative sentences describe the interesting and quirky facts about snails, and relate these facts to other familiar animals, even humans. I love the emphasis on the yuck factor of mucus, comparing a snail’s output to a human’s. Warm drawings of a diverse cast of kids and animals, with a nod to medieval monks’ fascination with snails, and even a simple snail drawing lesson, make this a delightful early reader for kids who favor non-fiction.
To whom would you recommend this book? For newly reading kids ages 5-8, especially those who like the particular humor of the Toon series.
Who should buy this book? Elementary school and public libraries
Where would you shelve it ? Easy readers/graphic easy readers, depending on your collection
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
