Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5
Genre: Board Book/Concept Book
What did you like about the book? Two happy and curious children explore nature and discover various flora, fauna, and outdoor objects with an alphabetical theme. The book’s loose narrative structure allows young ones to follow the journey in a natural, sequential manner with attractive and colorful pages. The vocabulary is showcased in a way that lets readers discover the words themselves through clues (i.e. “N is for Nest” compliments the little girl looking at a nest through binoculars).
This is a simple concept book done in a beautiful manner.
Anything you didn’t like about it? As with many ABC books, “Z” is lack luster in its presentation; the word is “zigzag,” yet the children appear to be running in a straight line, poorly illustrating the meaning.
To whom would you recommend this book? Families looking for a book to enjoy with their pre-reader that focuses on nature or the alphabet. This is a gentle way to introduce many outdoor concepts and the benefits of exploration while reviewing ABCs. Older children will love spending extra time on pages to absorb the scenes.
Who should buy this book? Children’s and public libraries with board book collections
Where would you shelve it ? Board books
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No, but do keep it in mind for recommendations.
