The Worm Whisperer – Betty Hicks, illustrated by Ben Hatke, Roaring Brook Press, (9781250148209), 2017

Format: Paperback

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre: Contemporary realistic fiction

What did you like about the book? Ellis’s father needs surgery that costs $1000, which the family does not have so there is little joy in the house as his father is mostly confined to an easy chair and his mother works multiple jobs. If Ellis can find a caterpillar that can win in the annual Wooly Worm Race, he can win the money to help his father. This is a sweet story with an old-timey feel about it enhanced by the wonderful illustrations of Ben Hatke.

Anything you did not like about this book? Not a thing.

To whom would you recommend this book? You might pair this one with an older story, Petey and Miss Magic by N. B. Dorman

Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it? Juvenile fiction

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No, not the top, but very charming.
