Mighty Jack and the Goblin King – Ben Hatke

Mighty Jack and the Goblin King – Ben Hatke, First Second/Roaring Brook Press, (9781626722668), 2017

Format: Paperback

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5+

Genre: Graphic novel/Fantasy

What did you like about the book? The story begins where Mighty Jack left off. Jack and Lilly continue their quest to rescue Jack’s sister, Maddy, who was abducted by a huge ogre. They find themselves on an alien world, filled with vicious rats, other monsters and friendly goblins. The obstacles they face are monumental but our plucky heroes continue on even after Lilly falls into the goblin’s domain and each is on their own. They make progress only to be thwarted by even larger challenges. The action is constant as is the undaunting bravery of the two. Hatke’s illustrations were drawn on laser printer paper with Sakura Pigma Micron pens over light colored pencil and digitally colored using Photoshop.

Anything you did not like about this book? It ended. Will there be any more?

To whom would you recommend this book? Those who read Mighty Jack have been waiting for this sequel. And fans of Hatke’s Zita the Spacegirl will be just as entranced by Mighty Jack (and its surprise at the end!).

Who should buy this book? Public and elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it? Graphic novels

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Definitely, especially if you have read the first story.

I loved this too, and the first book in the series. I have a few kids who asked me every month throughout the summer when this sequel would finally arrive!
