Wake Up, Tug by Michael Garland

Wake Up, Tug by Michael Garland, Holiday House Publishing, 9780823437856, 2017

Format: Board book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

What did you like about the book? Tug has a busy day ahead of him. He wakes up with the dawn and works all day guiding cargo ships, pulling the coal and garbage barges, pulling tall ships, and finally pulling the fireworks barge. The illustrations are bold and clear and this little board book gives importance to the lowly tug boat. I especially liked how the boats and barges are drawn to scale, showing how small the tug boat is in comparison to the boats it is pulling. The book is set in New York City and children from the city will recognize the landmarks.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I liked everything about the book.

To whom would you recommend this book? This is perfect for toddlers. Children who love boats will enjoy this book.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, day care centers

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes

Reviewer’s Name, Library (or school), City and State: Sandra Pacheco, ESL teacher Washington, DC.
