Cee Cee – by Mao Xiao, illustrated by Chunmiao Li & Yanhong Zhang, translated by Helen Wang, Candied Plums Publishing, 9781945295140, 2017

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

What did you like about the book? Why is Cee Cee sitting all alone on the park bench? All the children are playing games, eating pizza and swinging on swings. Through all this, Cee Cee continues to sit. At the end of the book we are all rewarded with the answer. She has been posing for a picture. I especially liked that the pages are filled with children doing all sorts of activities. It’s a busy book that will keep children interested. Although the text is written in simple language, children can use the book to engage in language learning on many levels, not only at the beginning level. This is a book written in Chinese with English pronunciation written above the Chinese characters.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I liked everything about the book.

To whom would you recommend this book? Parents who live in English-speaking countries and would like to speak to their children in Chinese will like this book.  It is also certified appropriate for novice learners of Chinese by the ACTFL Proficiency guidelines.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, elementary school libraries, Chinese immersion classes, any Chinese language learner

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes

Reviewer’s Name, Library (or school), City and State: Sandra Pacheco, ESL teacher Washington, DC.
