The Flea-tastics – Lisa Desimini

The Flea-tastics – Lisa Desimini, Boyds Mill Press, (9781629793030), 2017

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1- 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review)  2

Genre:  Picture Book

What did you like about the book? A little flea named Serafleana is a born jumper who dreams of joining a flea circus called The Fleatastics.  When she finally does get the chance, chaos erupts when a child in the audience says “Treat.” This causes Sparky, the sleeping dog whose back they are performing on, to wake up and begin to scratch.  Luckily, Serafleana saves the day with her jumping ability.  The digital illustrations of paper collage and paint bring the world of the fleas amidst dog fur to life.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  The book is quite cluttered with lots of text that clutters up the illustrations.  With all the asides and word balloons, this one would be difficult to use as a read aloud.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Dog owners may find this a funny story.

Who should buy this book?  Larger public libraries

Where would you shelve it?   Picture Books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles?    No
