What did you like about the book?  A little baby has both a best friend and babysitter in his Saint Bernard dog named JoJo.  The story begins on the inside front cover with JoJo and the baby having fun until the baby is taken away and placed in his crib.  The text is made up of less than a dozen words in word balloons, the majority of which are “Out!”  First, Jojo tries giving the baby a toy giraffe, but the baby just wants out of the crib.  The baby climbs out of the crib (“Down”) and is soon sliding down the stairs in a laundry basket with poor Jojo along for the ride.  Next the baby pulls a cake down from the kitchen table and the two have a feast before heading outside to sit and look at the stars.  As the oblivious parents watch tv and dance in the dark, JoJo takes the baby back to bed and joins him in the crib.  Dad discovers the mess and blames JoJo taking him “Out” of the crib and commanding that JoJo go “In” his crate.  But baby comes to the rescue and soon both baby and dog are joining mom and dad in their bed, as the book ends on the back cover.  The illustrations in acrylic paint, found paper and photoshop, depict a multiracial family in scenes that vary from full double page spreads to comic style panels.  The action plays out against nighttime hues of deep blues and black making the characters stand out.  This is a fun story that will have children reading along.

Anything you didn’t like about it?   No

To whom would you recommend this book?  This story will be enjoyed by children who love dogs and especially the Carl series by Alexandra Day.  This would be a fun read aloud to share with children who love to escape from their cribs.  The limited amount of text will make this one a good choice for beginning readers.

Who should buy this book?  Public libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture Books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles? No
