I Saw Anaconda – by Jane Clarke and illustrated by Emma Dodd, Nosy Crow/ Candlewick Press, 9780763693367, 2017

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

What did you like about the book? This large, brightly colored picture book is a take on the song, “I know an old lady who swallowed a fly.” What makes this book so special is that the animals are different, from an anaconda to a tick to a piranha, and also that it is a combination flap and pop-up book. It is lots of fun to read aloud and the pop-ups are ingenious. The flaps are full-page flaps and young children will be surprised as there is always a surprise under the flap along with the refrain ending “will she be sick.” Luckily at the end of the book she is sick, and everyone is safe.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I liked everything about this book.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Children ages 3-7. This is a great read aloud book for a classroom or a story hour at the library. Kids can join in with the refrain and the pictures are large enough for a big audience to see.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, elementary school libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes

Reviewer’s Name, Library (or school), City and State: Sandra Pacheco, ESL teacher Washington, DC.
