Benjamin is an Unusual Duckling – Yann Walker & Julie Mercier, Auzou, (9782733846131), 2017

Format: Hardcover Picture book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3

What did you like about the book? Benjamin is a little duckling that likes to have fun. Instead of quacking, he woofs. His parents love him for his eccentricities, but classmates find him weird. Benjamin meets Marcelle, a mole who made beautiful underground homes – for weasels and foxes. He meets a deaf rabbit, a snake with a lisp and a dog who uses a wheelchair and a blackbird with wings too small to fly. Benjamin begins to see that it may not be so bad being different especially when his “woofs” drive away a thief robbing the farm.  Bright, colorful, child-friendly illustrations enhance the story.

Anything you did not like about this book? Not really

To whom would you recommend this book? This is a good book for young children beginning school who may be worried about fitting in.

Who should buy this book? Public libraries

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No.
