Jack and the Beanstalk – illustrated by Ed Bryan

Jack and the Beanstalk – illustrated by Ed Bryan, Nosy Crow, 9780763693329, 2017

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

Genre:  Fairy Tale

What did you like about the book? This is an updated version of the classic tale, perfect for preschoolers because it has a happy ending and isn’t too scary or violent.  It teaches the lessons of being helpful and that stealing is wrong.

Anything you didn’t like about it? As in the classic tale, the giant is mean and bad because he steals, but Jack steals with the intent of doing good so the lesson is a little murky.

To whom would you recommend this book?  For fans of the Nosy Crow version of Little Red Riding Hood.

Who should buy this book? Public Libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Picture books or Fairy Tales

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes, it’s a good version of the fairy tale that can be read to younger audiences.
