Bear Counts by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jane Chapman

Bear Counts by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jane Chapman, Simon & Schuster, 9781481499521, 2017

Format: Board book

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 4

What did you like about the book? Written in verse, this book shows Bear and Mouse exploring their world and counting. Each page features a number that is written out and also written as a number symbol. This is a small board book, so little hands will be able to turn the pages easily and count along with Bear and Mouse. I especially liked how they incorporated the numbers into the story.

Anything you didn’t like about it? I didn’t like the exclamation mark next to the number. Even at the end of the book when the child is asked to count, there are exclamation marks next to each number.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Children ages 1-3

Who should buy this book? Public libraries, elementary school libraries, day care centers

Where would you shelve it? Picture books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes

Reviewer’s Name, Library (or school), City and State: Sandra Pacheco, ESL teacher Washington, DC.
