Wonderful You: An Adoption Story – Lauren McLaughlin, illustrated by Meilo So, Random House, (9780553510010), 2017

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1- 5 (5 is excellent or a Starred review) 3

Genre:  Picture Book

What did you like about the book?  In rhyming text an adoptive mother tells the story of her child’s arrival in her life.  The story begins “In s faraway land lived a lady in blue/ with a babe in her tummy named Wonderful You. She looked north. She looked south. She traveled the world, asking, ‘Who’ll be the parents of this beautiful girl?’”  The swirling water-color illustrations have a dreamlike quality with the parents and child floating through the pages.  This is a story to hand to adoptive parents to read to their children.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  The rhyming text is a bit forced at times and tends toward the saccharine.  Children might be confused by the “Lady in Blue” floating in on a crescent moon and leaving on a giant white bird.

To whom would you recommend this book?  This is one for adoptive families.

Who should buy this book?  Public libraries

Where would you shelve it?  Picture Books

Should we (librarians/readers) put this at the top of our “to read” piles?   No
