The 12 Days of Kindergarten – by Jenna Lettice, illustrated by Colleen Madden

The 12 Days of Kindergarten – by Jenna Lettice, illustrated by Colleen Madden, Random House, (9780399557330), 2017.

Format: Paperback picture book

Rating: 1-5:  (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3

What did you like about the book? This cumulative counting book shows children what to expect when they start kindergarten, for example, “On the third day of kindergarten, here’s what I saw at school: Three nice friends, Two yummy snacks, and one cubby of my very own.” The emphasis is on the smiling multicultural children as they read, count, draw, play at recess, paint, and build with blocks. In fact, the teacher is included in only four scenes. One drawback, if you try to sing the lines aloud to the tune of Twelve Days of Christmas, many of the lines don’t scan easily. There is a page of stickers on the last page.

Anything you didn’t like about it?  No.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Recommend to kindergarten teachers and parents of soon-to-be kindergarteners.

Who should buy this book? Kindergarten classrooms and parents of children who are getting ready to start kindergarten.

Where would you shelve it?  Shelve with other picture books.

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles?  No.
