The Big Bad Fox – Benjamin Renner

The Big Bad Fox – Benjamin Renner, First Second, (9781626723313), 2017

Format: Paperback

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

Genre: Graphic novel/humor

What did you like about the book? It’s happened before: some poor animal gets stuck with the offspring of another – and is forced to raise them. In this graphic novel, the fox is a very poor hunter, the laughing stock at the farm when he comes intending to steal chickens but ends up with turnips. Wolf finally convinces him to steal eggs that will hatch into yummy little edible morsels but of course they imprint upon the fox when they hatch and he becomes “Mommy”, though very reluctantly. The utterly charming and expressive illustrations are reminiscent of The Fox and Hen stories by Beatrice Rodriguez as is the droll humor of the hapless fox.

Anything you did not like about this book? Too perfect….

To whom would you recommend this book? Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins comes to mind as well as those by Beatrice Rodriguez – but there are so many of similar theme.

Who should buy this book? Public and lower elementary school libraries.

Where would you shelve it? Graphic novels

Should we (librarians) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Very near as it is super fun!
