The Spider-Man Secret! (The Amazing Spider-Man) by Steve Behling, illustrated by Dan Panosian, Cover art by Juan Ortiz. Marvel, 2017.  9781484749289

Format: Paperback (with board covers)

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 3

Genre:  Super heros

What did you like about the book? Doc Ock, the Vulture, Mysterio, and the Green Goblin all make appearances in this action-packed easy reader. Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, starts off having a good day at school, until his science teacher introduces a special guest that stimulates his spider-sense. The guest has a large green robot disguising … Doc Ock! Before the robot can reveal Peter’s identity, Spider-Man leaps into the air, and all his nemeses line up for battle. Retro illustrations evoke vintage comic book pages, but in a reader format. There are speech bubbles and boxes, but page-size cels. Easy to read text, including action words (e.g., “crash,”, “thud”) and humor make this an appealing title for super hero fans.
Anything you didn’t like about it? I would have loved this in a comic book form.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Clearly, the intended audience is 4-8 yr old super hero fans. This is a stepping stone to the super hero comics. It would serve as a read aloud or an easy reader.

Who should buy this book? Day cares and public libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Easy readers

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? No
