What did you like about the book? Rising second grader Dani lives with her dad, who is recovering from an accident. Her mother is dead. When her dad invites to dinner a nurse he came to know while in the hospital. Dani is not happy. Luckily her grandparents arrive to save the day. A field trip to the zoo provides the setting for a coincidental reunion with her old best friend Ella, where the girls get separated from their school groups and have an adventure. Family dynamics, bullying and friendship are all part of the relatable drama in Dani’s world. Expressive pen and ink drawings grace every page. The humor and detail and are reminiscent of Pippi Longstocking characters. This lively Swedish import is a delight, either for kids new to independent reading, or as a family read aloud. It’s part of a series, although it is not necessary to have read through the series to enjoy this story.
To whom would you recommend this book? Hand this to fans of Ivy and Bean and Piper Green and the Fairy Tree. Kids who like reading about kids in other cultures will enjoy this too.
