Annie and Simon: Banana Muffins and Other Stories by Catharine O’Neill

Annie and Simon: Banana Muffins and Other Stories by Catharine O’Neill, Candlewick, 2017. 9780763674984

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 1-5 (5 is an excellent or a Starred review) 5

Genre: Realistic fiction

What did you like about the book?  Annie and her big brother Simon make muffins, babysit a neighbor’s baby, and find a new use for Annie’s old pacifier. Their adventures are warm, domestic ones, where their loving relationship takes center stage. Simon seems to be high school age, and is clearly responsible for Annie, but also displays such affection and respect for his little sister, that I think kids will be charmed. Color watercolor illustrations appear on every page opening and offer humorous details. Three short chapters make this easy chapter book an entertaining read aloud or a satisfying independent read.

To whom would you recommend this book?  Kids who like the Clementine series and gentle realistic fiction will enjoy this one.

Who should buy this book? Elementary school and public libraries

Where would you shelve it ? Fiction

Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
